Which charities spend the most on administration?
MoneySense ranks Canada’s 40 largest charities by what they spend on administrative expenses.
Ever wonder how much of your donations to charity are gobbled up by administrative costs? We looked at Canada’s 40 largest charities, and found the ones with the highest and lowest percentages of revenue used for managerial, administrative and fundraising expenses, according to Canada Revenue Agency returns.
When asked why their administrative costs are so high, both the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario and the Canadian Cancer Society’s Ontario division said their expensive fundraising lotteries were to blame. But they added that the lotteries are great investments because they pay for themselves and bring in lots of extra revenue.
Below is a list of Canada’s 40 biggest charities, ranked by administrative costs.
UPDATES: Chart is now sorted by % of revenue spent on admin., fundraising and management. The revenue figure and percentage of administrative, fundraising and management costs for Shepherd’s Care Foundation were incorrect and have been updated.
