Burglaries increase in summer months
Houses are 4% more likely to be robbed in June, 9% more likely to be robbed in July and 20% more likely to be robbed in August.
While enjoying the rising temperature, keep in mind that something else is rising as well — the probability that your home will be broken into.
Widespread ownership of easy-to-grab items like laptops, cell phones and video game consoles has contributed to the 24% increase for dollar amount of items stolen per house since 2002, says Aviva Canada Inc., an insurance firm.
Houses are 4% more likely to be robbed in June, 9% more likely to be robbed in July and 20% more likely to be robbed in August.
Break-ins are more likely to happen at the end of the week. Houses are 28% more likely to be robbed on Fridays than Sundays.
Aviva says simple precautions can make a big difference:
1. Ensure that all windows are locked
2. Install deadbolts and alarm systems
3. Make your house look occupied when away, especially when on vacation
