Why?

New Glasgow is on Nova Scotia’s north shore, 159 kilometres north of Halifax. Major employers near the town include Sobeys, Maritime Steel and Michelin Tires. Statistics Canada data state that high unemployment is the town’s main concern but, according to Mayor Barrie MacMillan, there are more jobs available than people to fill them.

New Glasgow’s crime rate is another concern, mainly due to the town’s tax base of 9,500 that services a region of close to 55,000. The result is an overstretched police force and a ranking for overall crime of 159th out of 180.

However, a multi-pronged effort is underway to turn things around, including a downtown revitalization project, a business investment strategy and numerous partnerships with private sector, public sector and community groups.

The man who wrote the article has never even been to the town and based his info completely off of statistics that you can see how accurate they are by listing Maritime steel as an employer that has been bankrupt for 2 years now. Also saying new glasgow police cover the whole county off 55,000 people is also wrong as 3 of those towns have there own police force and there is also a RCMP there that is suppose to look after the "rural" areas. New glasgow isnt the best place to live but if you gonna go and call it the worst place in Canada you sure as hell better have correct information which its very easy to see they dont in just the few details the offer to share. I enjoyed my time living there, and have lived in much worse places in this country from coast to coast but thats just my 2 cents.

  2. Hi! I would just like to express my gratitude for the first class info you have here on this post. I will be visiting your website for some more awesome information soon.

New Glasgow native here. I can confirm it is an absolutely horrible place to live.

They crunched the numbers wrong. Simple as that. They used statistics from New Glasgow and combined it with statistics from the other 4 tax collecting towns directly connected. This is a poor excuse for journalism MoneySense.

This is a town that frequently rates as one of the top 10 best places to live in Canada in other studies.

The Mayor of New Glasgow needs to give his head a shake. As for jobs, yes, there may be plenty pithy low-income positions, but how many jobs are there that can sustain a family of four. Call Centres are not meaningful long-term solutions to an issue in employment (ie ICT, etc). Yes I LOVE Pictou County, and it is where I grew up, and currently reside. But seriously, take into consideration that this article, although written as "New Glasgow" apparently took Pictou County as a whole (Michelin Tires, etc) in the deciding factors.

Statistics are not an exact science, and to take every article that is based on such (criticism is not a bad thing), is like swallowing everything CNN throws at us like it was our final feast before the slaughter.

Seriously people. Yes, Pictou County has some flaws, but as a whole (I agree with you Drew), it is worth looking at all of the more positive retributes over the negative! :)

Wow, they are being pretty generic here. What type of "crime"? This is the first I have ever seen or heard of the police being "overstretched" and we have all these big box stores opening up on top of the carworks regaining life. I wouldn't buy into anything this article has to offer.

I live just outside of new glasgow. I make 28 bucks an hour, which pays for my acreage and takes care of my family. Try doing that in Vancouver. I like it here, and the author of this silly article probably would too if he/she gave it a chance. Crime? I used to live in Surrey. Give me a break. We don't even lock our house here. Beaches, culture, music, weather, affordable housing and good neighbors outweigh a lack of job prospects. I moved 6000 km to be here.

  8. drew says:

The original article had the distance at 266 km.

  9. Richard says:

You're pointing out that the article got the distance wrong by 1km? How odd…

These are facts Visitor from Halifax – the airpot is a distance from the downtown core of the city of Halifax
