Worried about a flood this spring? Call your insurance provider. For the first time, homeowners can purchase extra “overland water protection” to guard against damage caused by accumulation or run-off of surface waters, including torrential rainfall when water enters the property. Available from Aviva at the end of May in Ontario and Alberta and by the end of the year for the rest of Canada, the pricing will be similar to a sewer back-up rider, which ranges from $50 to $1,500 per year depending on where you live. “The new coverage picks up where sewer back-up coverage ends,” says Alison Steele, manager of corporate affairs for Aviva. Expect other insurance companies to follow Aviva’s lead and start rolling out their own version of flood insurance shortly.
