Markets still “choppy,” investors warned

Undervalued markets may not be the bargain opportunity they seem

With stock markets the world over trading well below fair value, some investors are looking at the current global financial weakness as an opportunity to scoop up bargains before the inevitable recovery. But that may not be such a sure-fire strategy, according to economists. Mike Ryan, UBS’ head of wealth management research for the Americas, says “Markets will remain choppy,” and his words are echoed by Beata Caranci of TD Economics, who warns that the U.S. economy especially is “at a crossroads.” A recovery is on-track, they suggest, but it won’t be a straight line to greater prosperity — basically, they seem to be saying, stay vigilant and take nothing for granted.
