TrenchcoatWant to look stylish while keeping dry? A trench coat’s your answer. “It’s a staple you’ll never grow out of,” says FAJO magazine stylist Amalia Bentivoglio. But there’s no need to spend $1,000 or more when good quality trenches can be had for $150 to $300. Pay more and you’re paying for marketing. Pay less and you’ll get cheaper material and sub-standard craftsmanship. Look for a strong lining and seams that sit well on the shoulders. A shoddily made coat has lining that bunches, shredding button holes and seams that gap when you pull.

General price range: $50 to $1,000

Perfect price: $225
