Love costs

See what Canadians are spending on their loved ones this Valentine’s Day.

  • True love may be free but the way we choose to express can cost a pretty penny. An ongoing Scotiabank Facebook poll has found roughly half of the nearly 2,500 people who’ve responded to date will spend absolutely nothing on their significant other this Valentine’s Day. Just over 900 people will spend less than $100 and a small minority will spend more than $200.
  • Speaking of love and money, some 20% of couples in distress cite debt problems as the main reason, a new study has found. The study, conducted by Ipsos Reid for Calgary-based accounting firm MNP Ltd., also found that younger married couples and those in common-law partnerships were most likely to say money was affecting their relationships (41%) compared to middle-aged couples (28%) and seniors (16%). The findings underscore the importance of discussing money matters early on in a relationship.
