Male-dominated industries took the brunt of the downturn.
Men experienced job losses of up to three times the rate of women during the recession, according to Statistics Canada.
Sectors such as manufacturing, construction and natural resources—all male dominated—were some of the hardest hit during the downturn, resulting in a drop in the male employment rate of 2.9 percentage points.
By contrast, employment amongst females fell by only one percentage point due to the stability of the sectors typically dominated by women such as health care, social assistance, and educational services.
