Looks aren’t everything, says Corry Flader, owner of Vancouver’s The Umbrella Shop, the last brolly maker in North America. Buy based on construction: look for a steel or fibreglass frame, a steel stick with a plastic or wooden handle and a “pongee” (waterproof polyester) cover.
