Canada Savings Bond rates are ridiculously low

The current rate being offered is just 0.65%.

Online only.

The Canadian government recently announced rates for its Canada Savings Bonds–and they’re offering just 0.65%, says Jonathan Chevreau of the Financial Post. So for keeping $1,000 in a bond until November 1, 2011, you’d get just $6.50 interest. Less liquid Canada Premium Bonds are offering just 1.1%

Mostly likely, this meager return would be eaten up by inflation, as well as taxes, if it was held outside an RRSP or TFSA.

  35. I agree that they are ridiculously low and when I see that they are getting .5% or more out of that it is more than ridiculous. I checked the rates and the rate is say 1.50% and when I redeem I only get .5%. Where is the other amount going? I am not impressed.

  36. Of course, you could move that decimal point over and then it would be 65%. LOL
