Dashboard cams can save you from insurance hikes.
Photography student Herman Sham’s dashboard-mounted video camera paid off big time after he got into a collision on a major Toronto highway. He used his footage to prove that the other driver—who demanded $500 on the spot to cover damage—had backed into Sham’s car. Could a dashboard camera help prove your innocence and prevent costly insurance hikes after an accident?
Toronto police constable Clint Stibbe says dashboard cameras help when it’s your word against another driver’s. “It’s like having an impartial witness.” A simple camera costs as little as $40, although pricier models capture more angles. But be warned—if you’re at fault in an accident, you’re still obligated to share the footage with the police and insurance companies.
